In my never ending quest to champion the “little” guys (the useless pieces that WOTC created) I’ve looked over every fringe piece in the first six sets (Rebel Storm to Bounty Hunters.) Every piece that’s been boosted in some way (BH’s, Black Sun, Mercenary, etc.) has been elininated. The remainder is a rather interesting mélange of characters.

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to try to create a piece that will help as large a chunk of these poor orphans as you can.

List

Gran Raider
Nikto Soldier
Ithorian Scout
Kaminoan Ascetic
Klatooinian Enforcer
Twi'lek Scoundrel
Nautolan Soldier
Devaronian Soldier
Gotal Fringer
Utapaun Soldier
Aqualish Spy
Zabrak Fringer
Mustafarian Soldier
Quarren Assassin
Quarren Raider
Weequay Leader
Defel Spy
Iktotchi Tech Specialist
Ishi Tib Scout
Yuzzem
Mustafarian Flea Rider
Utapaun on Dactillion
B'omarr Monk

Limitations

Must be Fringe, 25 pts or less, no Force Powers, No official sub faction (Black Sun, Hutt Cartel, Vong Collaborator, etc.) no more than six abilities (unique and CE’s count as an ability.)

Let’s see some creativity people.

1. You may update any existing versions you already have and/or create a new one. You may update/create several versions of the character but you must ultimately select 1 you wish to run with. (this must be done by the schedule below)

2. Place a hyperlink in this forum to make it easier to find your character. You can just post the stats or image here but if changes are needed it would be easier (and save space) if you just used a Hyperlink (If you don't know how to post Hyperlinks in a forum setting please ask and we will help you. It's not hard )

3. Voting works as follows, pick your three favorite customs based on accuracy to the character, design, balance or whatever you decide makes the best incarnation of the challenge character. First place receives 3 points, 2nd place receives 2 points, and 3rd place receives 1 point.

4. You do not have to enter the contest in order to vote. But unless you enter you must have at least 10 forum posts.

5. To make things fair you must vote in order to win the contest. Try to give feedback if possible to help designers out. You must choose three characters entered in the contest and you may not rate or vote for your own character.

6. The winner will be decided by how many points they receive. Ties will be broken by most 1st place votes, then if still tied, 2nd place votes and then 3rd place votes. If still tied, then the outcome is a tie.

7. You may not change or update the entered character AFTER the deadline.

You will have until Saturday, May 26th, 2018 @8AM EST to get your submissions in. Anything submitted after this point will not be included in the voting.

Voting will start at 8pm on Sunday evening and end at 11pm EST on Monday, May 28th, 2018.
At the conclusion of the voting the scores will be tallied and the winner will start a new topic with their choice of theme.

Very tricky challenge. This biggest hurdle is giving those guys a boost without also giving the boost to the better pieces.

My thought process led to this:

http://www.bloomilk.com/Custom/33102/anarchist-revolutionary-leader

This madman gives a boost to cheap swarm squads, but for the best results, the swarm has to have different units rather than being all 1 character. And his built-in antisynergies hopefully prevent too much of a power combo from happening. Still, he winds up feeling more like a themed or scenario piece than a competitive one.

It is a tricky one, yet isn't that the whole idea of the Customs Contest? Agree about keeping it limited; better pieces don't Need help.

This is one of those instances where so many people have issues with both simple custom pieces and even the V-Sets at times; if its not a Power this, niche filler That or Fix What ... why do it? God Forbid he isn't "competitive" enough for Tier 1 play!! RollEyes

Because its fun, it's interesting and ultimately, isn't that why we're all drawn to the game in the first place??

Need to actually work for a bit ... I'll put my stuff up in a bit.

Peace,

surf

I like the prompt a lot, but definitely a challenge getting the piece to work without helping where it is not needed.

Here is my entry, which happens to have a very similar theme to EmporerDragon's. Great minds and all that I guess.

Grandkids are time consuming ....

So, anyway, as usual I can't decide who I like ...

Chevin Fringer Lord I first createn this guy about 5-6 years ago and have played around with him at various times. He help's about a dozen or so otherwise useless pieces. Shmi would say something about its not Power this or Meta tier that but I don't think everything needs to be.

Tholothian Commander Now this guy is only a few days old. I finished him yesterday morning; I saw GG also had a piece that affected soldiers and I deliberately Didn't look at your guy GG because I didn't want it influencing mine. There a a handful of pieces this guy affects. Toyed with the idea of Squad this/that but ultimately went with Ad. Cover & Mobile Attack. Yes I know some people don't like 3-4 point shooters but with ten HP's you can accidently kill a few hundred of them before they could get a shot off. I made him a Unique just because he gives out a fair amount of stuff.

Cheers,

surf

Looks like GG beat me to the punch but how about a slightly different take on the soldiers.

Didn't you use this one before? or was that a different chevin. Might just be the picture that's throwing me off if you reused it.

Interesting take, the Soldiers are definitely the easiest target to boost from your list without getting carried away. Similar to one of my ideas for the Homeworld Defense Captain, before I settled on what he is now.

Yes, soldiers were the obvious choice which is why I also made the Chevin ... don't always go with the obvious. Problem is I like this guy and how he turned out so not sure which to pick Scared

Maybe I saw him when lurking in your card thread then if you put him in there - I just can't get past the feeling that I've seen that one before (not that their is anything wrong with it, but its making it hard for me to focus on what he offers).

If you Google "bloomilk chevin custom" he's the one that pops up; December 2011. I've updated him since. BigGrin

Sorry, I have been sucking at leaving comments the last month.

I like the 25 point Itholotian Commander.

I like the simple yet helpful boosts. and it is a more "clean" design imo

The only change to him that I would suggest would be specifying non-unique fringe soldiers, it's currently not an issue though so it's fine as is too.

As of right now, there are no Unique Fringe soldiers. The only mini excluded would be the Guavian Death Gang Soldier, which is what I aimed at excluding anyway.

Emperor, Solid chaotic piece and love that he is an anti-commander commander. A bit of a wordy card but flavour text is brilliant.

Jen, really like the ideas behind this guy and on his own he is a solid entry for the game, you also really toned down the original CE to focus on the non-uniques so props there. I still think I would take him for his plasma bolt to boost up characters not listed here like the Kubaz Spy but the CE really helps the non-super stealth/cloaked types so pretty good job overall.

Oakel, really like the theme behind your character. Only two concerns is first that he would probably be brought for his powerful CE and stronger non-uniques over the weaker non-uniques listed by Surf. And his second CE would actually benefit unique characters more than any non-unique. Secondly simplicity-wise you have 3 brand new SAs and a hefty CE on a cheap character which can add to game complexity. Uninspiring leader is rather clever though, and I love the Batman Flavour text haha.

Surf, well done on the Tholothian, I was trying to pick it apart since your CE and rapport seemed so broad but really the only good soldier has 30 base damage and all other fringe soldiers are garbage (I guess all of the good soldiers are still fighting for their factions haha) so great balanced job.

LB, another excellent take to help boost the poor Soldiers, squad abilities are very thematic and about my only gripe is a bit of a wordy card for its cost and no flavour text! There have been so many good texts this time around it's worth a point on its own haha. But you have some seriously nice theme going on.
