Finding myself friends with Trekkies, I am often put on the spot for any confusing aspects of Star Wars. I am often able to fend them off, easily, but found my self at a loss for rationalization of a question I had never asked before.
What is symbolized by Luke's fight with the false Vader in the Dagobah cave? It makes little sense to me when I think about it.
The best I could consider is that it symbolizes Luke's subconscious goals for himself, that he wants to weild absolute power himself, making him prone to the dark side.
  Is this about right?

it means Luke has to conquer his fear and hatred to grow. He hates Vader for killing Obi-Wan, yet fears Vader's power. It also is warning, that he walks a thin line and if he is not careful, he could become that which he hates.
