Are there any Axis and Allies miniatures players here? I recently got back into this game and it's a lot of fun.

I played the old A and A but never the minis. I too wonder how it compares with SWM.

Yep, Brad and I (from SWMiniverse) play. It's a good game. Although made by the same company, the systems are quite different.

Some bigger differences:
A&A uses quite a few d6 while SWM is d20
A&A uses hexes instead of squares like SWM.
Line of sight is different.
A&A has 'simultaneous' attacks.

Some similarities:
Both are tactical (not strategic) games that use figures with point values to have even games.
Both have commanders that can help your squad.

Check out http://aaminis.myfastforum.org/ for an active community about another game that Wizards has seemingly given up on.

A&A minis uses may d6, sometimes up to 18 or more, but it makes sense for the game, since you count up number of hits(4 or more) rather then dice totals.
there are many, many more vehicles in Axis and Allies, but the infantry can threaten them.
There are planes in A and A .
That and the above post about covers the major differences, if you are at al interested in it I would recommend getting the starter set, it's around the cost of a pack (15 dollars) and gives a good game intro, although with the 3/1 Allies to Axis tank ratio I would say use the russian tank for the axis.

Axis and Allies miniatures is the only other mini game that looked like it might interest me. (Dungeons and Dragons would have too if it hadn't been dropped by WotC as well.) Is A&A made by WotC? How much do the boosters cost and how many mini's come per booster? One other question, if I purchase a starter set is that enough to play a game so I can at least check it out?

the boosters and singles and so forth are in the same range as SWM, 15$ for a booster, etc. If you buy the starter set, you cam play games but as i said for some reason they gave the allies 3 tanks to the germans one. As the german tank is a bit weaker then the British and US and the Russian tank a bit stronger, you should just use the Russian tank for the Germans.

Eh, D&D minis weren't very enjoyable for me, felt like a more complicated version of SWM with wierd little pieces that fill your booster packs.

Ya I actually wanted the D&D mini's more for playing 2nd Edition D&D. Your right, the mini's version looked more complicated than it needed to be.

I did check out the A&A stuff at one LGS but didn't see any starter sets. Sad

You can get them online at most minis websites, I'm pretty sure trollandtoad has some, and 12-7 games. It's the 1939-1945 starter set, the other two are long out of print.
