2020/20 Star Wars Miniatures Strategy Guide

A strategy guide leading up to GenCon 2020 and introducing Vset 20: Always Two There Are / Rise of Skywalker.

Faction: Imperial

Top Pieces to Know:

Admiral Gilad Pellaeon (Ysalamiri, versatility CE)
Admiral Daala (Prideful, Charging Fire)
Thrawn (Mitth'raw'nuruodo) (swap, Master Tactician, Opportunist)
Darth Vader of Lothal (Battle Ready plus big attacker)
Darth Sidious, Sith Mastermind ("Master Tactician" CE plus big attacker)
General Weir (Twin Attack for Storm Commandos/Speeders, Shields 2 for Storm Commandos)
Mas Amedda (Booming Voice)
Imperial Dignitary (Diplomat that can attack)
Supreme Leader Snoke (+4 Attack and +10 Damage for First Order)
Director Orson Krennic (synergy, movement breaker for Death Troopers)

Subfactions:
First Order
Imperial Knights
Hand of Judgement
Storm Commandos
Reborn
Death Troopers
Imperial Triumvirate
Dark Troopers
Nightsisters

Some squads:
"Roger Stone of SWM V2" (GenCon champ 2017)
"Vader/Palps!!!" (GenCon runner-up 2018)
"Les Femmes Fatales Redux: O.C.D. (GenCon champ 2018)
"Swappy McCool" (Thrawn, Morrigan Corde, Boba Fett AfH, Lobot, Pellaeon, Ozzel, Droopy McCool, Mas Amedda, R7, Mouse, Rodian Brute) GenCon champ 2019
"Have Fun Storming The Castle"
"Snoke's Avengers"

With 3 of the above squads winning the world championships of the past 3 years, it will come as no great surprise that the Imperials are the premier faction in the game; they have everything they need and more. Their most powerful squads are typically Daala + commanders + troopers, and Thrawn + (often Fringe) attackers + swap fodder. They also have strong squads centred around such luminaries as Vader of Lothal, Director Krennic or General Weir.

ATTA/RoS newcomers:
Wilhuff Tarkin creates his own new squad type that doesn't play well with most of the power pieces above, focusing on boosting Death Troopers and any of the less powerful variants of Darth Vader.

Several First Order characters, most notably:
Supreme Leader Kylo Ren and his Knights of Ren, who can play in several different variants of First Order squads, or even outside First Order.
General Pryde creates a new variant of First Order squad focused on troopers.
Jet Troopers and Treadspeeders, which together are an extremely mobile attack force for a First Order squad.

What do you think are the tier 1 squads in the various factions?

I'll just start here in the the Imperial thread with Thrawn-swap squads and Daala-based Scout troopers, since those are pretty clearly tier 1 and no controversy there.

Sid/VoL made the finals 2 years ago and I don't think anything has come out since then to knock them down from viability, so yeah I'd say they're definitely Tier 1. I think Mother Talzin is also right there, too.
