I've been playing on a paper map for just a few months and it's already showing significant wear, mostly where it's folded. Are there any good ways to prevent that kind of damage?
Also I recently discovered a SWM map in my garage which is actually like a proper cardboard boardgame map, are there ways to get more maps like that? I don't remember how I acquired it.

The hardboard map comes from the Revenge of the Sith starter set. That was the only hardboard map that they produced. Laminating maps will help them last longer, but it can get expensive if you have a lot of maps. It also may make storage more difficult, depending on how you are storing things.

roll your maps, or keep them flat.
folding is a death sentence for paper maps
when playing, cover with plex-glass, put it in a large top loader, or laminate them

Laminating is the way to go. You can roll them up, mark on them, etc. With young kids, it's the only way my maps have survived the years.
However, if that's too costly or you cannot find someone to do it, buy a sheet of plexiglass (acrylic) from Home Depot and cut it to size would be a decent cheaper alternative. (as Jak pointed out above)
If you want to store them without folding, buy a larger shipping tube (say 5-6" diameter) and roll them up into that.
Or find an area big enough to store flat.

Laminating is very important for keeping your maps in good shape. A lot of times places will give you discounts for higher volume lamination orders, FYI.
Also store them rolled or flat (unfolded) if you can.
You definitely want to keep your maps nice. They are going to get harder and harder to find. Good luck :)
