I don't think this is possible yet, but thinking about future design...
If a character with versatility was swapped for another version with versatility, could that swapped in character then swap out again? The idea being here a character could end up using versatility to collect multiple commander effects at a cost.
Maybe there's no answer until it's possible, just curious if there's any sort of precedent for this.
