It is a difficult role to fill. But with George Lucas at the helm, I think it was basically irrelevant who played Anakin. It was always gonna be a disaster.

To be honest, I was fairl happy with him. I don't blame him for the awful romance dialoge scenes, and I thought he did anger/hatred/vengeful pretty well.

I remember back in 2000 there was a lot of rumours that Leo DiCaprio would play Anakin. In hindsight, given the quality of his work in recent years (Catch Me if You Can, The Departed, Aviator, Inception) he would have been an awesome choice. But it is what it is.

Seriously, could you imagine Keller and Jar Jar fighting to 'Duel of the Fates'?

Hayden Might have been a little wooden in the love scenes with Padme, But he did do a pretty nice job with the Other scenes. His lightsaber scenes were excellent. He put in a lot of time with the practice sword with Ewen Mcgreggor. The dude who plays him(name escapes me) in the Clone Wars might have been a good Anikan, But he might have a little young.
