ok so i was thinking today, if i killed my friends (what ever) and he rolled the dice for the death save and got a 17 or higher. would i still get the points? or would i need to rid myself of him entirely

You would not get the points for the piece because Leia' CE says that instead of being defeated, the affected character is placed somewhere in the deployment zone (for those characters with Emplacement, they can be placed on the owning player's half of the board).
