I know this will probably never come up, and that my situation below might not seem reasonable, but go with it for the sake of the question please.
Is mettle required when rolling if it is on the character's card?
You have a dominate mind effecting your own GOWK but you roll 12, and you fpr and you get an 8, can you choose to not apple mettle?

Mettle: If this character spends 1 Force point to reroll, add +4 to the result.
(not optional by the glossary definition)

Well okay then.
May I ask what things are optional? Like Attacks of Opportunity, optional?

Yes. Those are optional. Djem So saves are not optional, but the attack granted by it is optional. When using Strafe/Gallop Attacks, you MUST attack any character you pass (or go over in the case of Strafe). So you have to be careful using them. There are a TON of things that are optional and a ton that aren't. You just have to pay attention to the wording. For instance, if Mettle would have said "If....to reroll, the character may add +4 to the result.", that would make it optional to add the +4.
