Ok, is anybody as pumped for this as I am??????????????

THR confirms that an Obi-Wan Kenobi movie is indeed in the works - with Billy Elliot and The Hours director Stephen Daldry reportedly in talks to direct! Other than a director, it's being said that plans for the film are still in the early stages, with no script in place yet. It's speculated that Daldry would both develop and write the film, if he signs on.

This Obi-Wan Kenobi movie has been a long time coming, with fans wishing for it, Lucasfilm teasing it, and Star Wars prequels star Ewan McGregor consistently reaffirming his commitment to reprising his role as the young Obi-Wan. There's been no official confirmation of McGregor returning yet, but safe to say, it's something that fans expect.

In fact, when Lucasfilm was first acquired by Disney, and we were all trying to imagine what kind of spin-off films we could have, I was enthusiastically behind the Obi-Wan idea. Here's was my take:

Whether delving into Obi-Wan’s younger years; filling in the gaps in his life during Episodes 1 – 6 (The Clone Wars, his exile years before A New Hope) – or maybe just a portrait of the man that covers all that aforementioned material – Kenobi is a complex, pivotal character who can surely support a standalone film.

People love McGregor's Obi-Wan, and there’s the added benefit of possibly leaving room for Liam Neeson to return as Qui-Gon Jinn, Obi-Wan’s mentor. Star Wars could use a good Medieval Knight-style film, and Obi-Wan’s adventures could certainly be spun in that way.

Now, let's get an Obi-Wan Kenobi Epic made!!!!!!!!!!! He definitely deserves an Epic in our game ThumbsUp

Here is the article in full, that "The Hollywood Reporter" has published!

Oscar-nominated filmmaker Stephen Daldry is in early talks for the pic, which would center on the Jedi master who has been played by both Alec Guinness and Ewan McGregor.

Stephen Daldry is Star Wars’ newest hope.

The Oscar-nominated director behind Billy Elliot and The Hours is in early talks to helm a Star Wars stand-alone movie centering on Obi-Wan Kenobi, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

Sources say talks are at the earliest of stages and that the project has no script. If a deal is made, Daldry would oversee the development and writing with Lucasfilm brass.

The Obi-Wan Kenobi stand-alone is one of several projects being developed by Lucasfilm and Disney that fall outside the trilogies telling the saga of the Skywalker family. A Han Solo movie is now in the final stages of shooting under new director Ron Howard, and Lucasfilm is also considering pics centering on Yoda and bounty hunter Boba Fett, among other characters.

In the original Star Wars trilogy, Kenobi is a desert-dwelling and war-weary hermit who later proves to be a wise and powerful warrior, brandishing a lightsaber. He is briefly a mentor to a young Luke Skywalker before being cut down by Darth Vader, his former pupil. Alec Guinness' portrayal of Kenobi garnered him an Oscar nomination.

The character played a central role in the George Lucas-directed prequels, which recount the origin of Vader and his betrayal of Kenobi and the Jedis. Ewan McGregor, who played the younger Kenobi in the prequels, has said he would be open to playing the character again. Sources stress, however, that since there is no script, no actor is attached.

Daldry hails from the theater world and made his feature debut with 2000's Billy Elliot, which netted him his first directing Oscar nomination. He followed that up with searing dramas The Hours and The Reader, which also netted him directing noms.

Daldry most recently directed episodes of Netflix’s period drama The Crown, which garnered him an Emmy nomination.
