2020/20 Star Wars Miniatures Strategy Guide

A strategy guide leading up to GenCon 2020 and introducing Vset 20: Always Two There Are / Rise of Skywalker.

Faction: Separatist

Top Pieces to Know (outside of subfactions):

General Loathsoam (Twin attack for all followers)
Nute Gunray (reinforcements so you can bring in Loathsoam if you aren’t going up against disruptive or a spotter if a heavy shooter team)
Grievous on Tsmeu-6 Wheel Bike (powerful strafed piece and can allow you some control of which Grievous to change into if you go up against a disruptive or counter squad)
Dooku (amazing anti-melee beatstick that hold his own with some support, needs more force points and a spotter)
BX Commando Droid Spotter (makes Separatists able to survive against a shooting squad)
Durge on Speeder Bike (solid strafer that can do some damage)
Battle Droid Officer (just always bring one)
San Hill (activation control, but currently nerfed)

The Separatists are more of a challenge to play these days so may not be a great beginner faction but they do have some strengths. First be aware of their weaknesses that droids can’t get many Commander Effects, Huges are neglected and terrible, strafing squads, BX Commandos, and their classic droid swarms have hard counters and they have limited protection from commander effect disruptive abilities. Also newer rules changes are activation control and reserves, two of the Separatist staples since WOTC times, have been nerfed to pretty much non-existence.

So despite wanting to load up a bunch of commanders you are probably safer to rely on hard stats and the fact that droids are immune to some of the things that target living characters. Pick some stronger droids (even fringe ones) throw in a spotter and call it ok. Also maybe splash in Nute Gunray so you have the option of bringing Loathsoam. Otherwise Grievous on Wheelbike, General Grievous Separatist commander and the new Neimodians at Central Control Computer are some things you can count on to help give a much needed boost to your droids. Dooku, Durge on Speeder, Asajj Nightsister, and Darth Sidious Supreme Chancellor are all decent options if you go for more of a hero build, and all of them enjoy the protection a spotter can offer. You can also go living separatists if that’s what you’re into...

Subfactions (and key pieces):
Huge Droids (sound great in theory but suffer from being unable to traverse the maps and thus getting shut down by stealth and mobile attacking teams)
Living Separatists
Nightsisters

ATTA/RoS newcomers:
Lux Bonteri (Separatist with Affinity) He gives a cannon shot to a non-Unique non-Fringe ally, those living separatists we talked about above...
Also a fringe Gladiator Droid that isn’t bad with some of the Separatist boosts for droids, but probably better with Bastilla and Bao-Dur, Tech Specialist

Poggle the Lesser probably deserves a mention as well. Even with his longstanding nerf, he's still quite good and a fairly important part of what I think is probably one of the best Separatist squads these days: http://www.bloomilk.com/Squad/164787/dire-strafes--i-want-my-mtb-
It's a bit weaker with the act control nerf, but will still outactivate the vast majority of squads.

Also, another ATTA Fringe newcomer that's significant for Seps is Talia, Nightsister Hunter. She does heaps of stuff for Nightsisters, and Seps have the best Nightsister attackers in Asajj and Savage Opress.
