The Squad Swap tournament yesterday worked so well that we're going to try it again (on Vassal again):

Friday September 4, 8:30pm Eastern

I'm hoping for exactly 8 players for the next one, but if it's not exactly 8 we'll still figure it out. With 8, we'll plan for a 3 round tournament. We'll play two rounds on Friday 9/4. Then the last round can either be played that night (if the players are up for it) or played a day or two later. A reminder of what the "Squad Swap" format is:

Quote:

Each player builds a squad as usual, but in round 1 each player uses their opponent's squad. So in round 1 you will play against the squad you built.

In each successive round, you take the squad you just used to the next table, and the two players swap squads before playing the game. So whenever you win, in the next round you have to beat the squad you had just won with.

This results in a winning player (the player who won all their games). And it results in a winning squadbuilder (whoever built the squad that won all of its games). These will necessarily be different players since the winning squadbuilder will have lost to their own squad in round one. You'll get to know multiple squads during the tournament: you build one squad and then play several different squads during the tournament.

It worked so well that all 4 players from the first Squad Swap tournament already signed up for the next one. Hopefully we'll get 4 more players for this tournament. Post here if you're interested.

This seems like such an easy format to abuse simply by building a really bad squad and then auto-winning the first game. Though I'm sure no one would try that.

So you auto lose the squad building part and give yourself a boring first game? Sounds like a lose-lose. Plus you would still have to win another game or two with other people's squads.

Yeah, I'm sure no one would want to make the first game so boring.

It goes against the spirit of the tournament for sure. Sure, You could do that, but it wouldn’t be very sportsmanlike And everyone would see that.

I am happy to give up my spot to make it an even 4 players. It's meant to be a sunny weekend, so I'll be able to shoot some hoops with mates instead.

I'll post here when I'm ready for them. I haven't decided on my own squad yet.

We're at 7 if Darth O is still in. Darth O - were you backing out or just offering to back out if we had an odd number?

Even with an odd number we should be okay. It should be easy to find someone to submit a 'dummy' squad.

I'm pretty keen to play if odd numbers aren't an issue.

Not a problem at all. Hopefully we'll get one more player for an even 8.

If we don't get an 8th, we'll get a "dummy squad" and the bye each round will turn into a solo game. In the solo game, the winning squad will advance and the human player will advance. Against the bye (unlike in other games) it's possible for both a player and that player's squad to advance. But because there are multiple rounds it will still not be possible for a player to be both the winning "player" and the winning "squadbuilder".

In the first-round solo game, there would be an inherent conflict of interest, of course. If you're more interested in seeing your own squad advance, you can play poorly for the dummy squad. Can't really do much about that. But hopefully we do find an 8th player.

Anyone want be the 8th player?

If we don't get an 8th player, anyone want to volunteer to submit a squad as the "dummy" squad?
