Question: can a small or medium character move diagonaly between two opposing adjacent characters? This seems to be a violation of squeezing rules. Is this a weird game mechanic or am I just being dense.

well, whenever i moved between characters, if they were enemies, they took AoOs.
but if they are yer own, then you should be able to move freely.
But im no expert, i just live here, lol.

Squeezing only applies to walls and pits. You cannot (or do not) squeeze past characters.
This said, you can move diagonal thru two diagonally adjacent enemy characters (taking AOOs)...and also you can do the same past low objects and difficult terrain.

OK. Large characters can not sqeeze past enemies. So a large character can be "boxed in" by four opponents, but a small or medium one can't be?

depends on whether yer also against walls and such.
a large chacter, say jabba crime lord, can still move diagonally through enemies, while proviking AoOs.
but, if some one is "boxed" in, where they cannot move adjacently (an enemy occupying the square you want to move into), then no, you are boxed in.
remember, you can only move through enemy characters if you have flight, or are a light spirit.

DarthJak, you've got your own rule book. Just because I remember all sorts of junk doesn't mean I'm right.

pg18 in the CW rulebook:
Big Characters and Moving
Some characters, such as the Wampa, the Rancor, and the AT-ST, are larger than human-sized characters and take up larger spaces. Such big characters pay the extra costs for moving into low objects or diffi cult terrain if any part of their space moves into such a square. They cannot move if any part of their space would move into a square containing an enemy.
Squeezing: Big characters can squeeze through small openings and down narrow hallways that are at least half as wide as their normal space (rounding up to 2 squares for Huge characters), provided that they end their movement in an area that they can normally occupy. Big characters can’t squeeze past enemies. Some very big droids and vehicles can’t squeeze at all." (u/l mine)

So no diagonal movement unless it's wide enough for the large/huge character.
