hey, if I wanted to play on Vassal using a custom map that is much larger than the standard maps provided, does anyone know how I would do that?

Vassal stores the game information in a file called swminis.vmod, you'll need to edit that file.
Open up vassal and select "edit module" from the file menu.
Find swminis.vmod wherever it is on your computer.
The game properties are organized into folders, you want to open the one called "Maps"
Right click on "Map Boards" and select "Add Board"
You'll be prompted to name the map and asked for a file location for the image.
Once you've done that you'll need to add a grid to the image to show where the squares are.
Right click on your new map board and select "Add rectangular grid"
You want to set all the numerical values to 50
Check the boxes for "show grid", "edges are legal locations", and "corners are legal locations" and pick a color for the grid.
Hit save and you're done.

You'll end up with something that looks like this:

Blink Now that's awesome! I had no idea you could do that. ThumbsUp Wish I had the time to make a custom map. Sad

Hey awesome instructions! Thanks!

By the way, why do I want to set al the numerical values to 50? I kinda want to make a custom map so that I can play a huge 500 point game on a huge map. Can I have more grid squares than normal if I set it to a value besides 50?

If you tell it to overlay a grid, it will overlay a grid over the entire image (however many squares that takes). If you import a giant image, you'll get a giant board. The squares want to be 50x50 since the character tiles are 50x50. The offsets control where the grid starts on the image. I don't remember the details, but if the grid isn't sitting where you want it play around with those values and it will shift.

The easiest way is to Gimp or Photoshop the map to make sure that the squares on the map are 50X50 pixels (resize the map to (34*50) by (22*50) if it is a 34 by 22 square map ).

then you can follow the directions just like Yoto said and you will have a map that lines up perfectly with the already existing squares.

[edit: it is also important to note that no one else will be able to see this map unless they have it uploaded into their Vassal Module also.]
