Special Abilities

  • Unique
  • Damage Reduction 10 (Whenever this character takes damage, reduce the damage dealt by 10. Attacks with lightsabers ignore this special ability.)
  • Emplacement (Cannot move or be moved. Set up anywhere on your half of the battle map.)
  • Machinery (Industrial Repair removes damage from this character)
  • Enter the Fray (During setup, choose another character whose counts as Vader. This character's point cost X is 1/2 the printed cost of the chosen character. If half or more of your squad has been defeated you may immediately remove this character from play and place the chosen character, or a character with a lower point cost who counts as Vader, in its space. The new character sets up in one of the squares this character formerly occupied.)

Very unique and fun. Enter the Fray might need some limitation. Perhaps a save? The Vader added cannot have a printed cost in excess of 1/2 of squad. This way you don't drop epic Vader during a 100 point match.

you could make enter the fray more like hansickle where it costs X. But this is a really cool idea. I love it!!!

Yeah, you definitely need some sort of restriction - but be careful who it lets in at what point values. EPIC Vader is not a good idea, but 100-point Vader isn't much weaker than EPIC. VoL's Rival will keep him in check, but even Vader DLotS or Lord Vader could be a game-changer. By all means allow whatever you want, this is way cooler than I thought it ever could be when I saw the title, but do be careful of the cost 70+ Vaders. Amazing idea!

Oh, and Force Grip is awesome.

I could do it like Hansickle, but you wouldn't be able to choose after you see what your opponent has. Hmmm...

1/17/2017 11:53:37 PM

I do have a suggestion, but it's kinda wordy: what if you chose any point cost X for the tank. The Vader you bring in can be no more than 3 times the chosen point cost, and you cannot free Vader until your opponent has defeated at least his point cost's worth of your pieces. For example, if you chose 24 as the point cost, you could (later) choose any Vader up to 72 points.
CorellianComedian

So once your opponent had defeated 72 points of your units, you could bring in Darth Vader, Dark Lord of the Sith. Or you could sacrifice points for necessity and bring in Vader, Scourge of the Jedi after they had defeated 55 points of your squad.

nice encapsulation of Vader in Bacta - is that based on the scene in Baast Castle, Vjun in Rogue One? its pretty amazing that, 20 years later, he's still red-raw burned and has to have daily bacta hehe. cost X - you may replace this character with another character who counts as Vader, where you pay at squad building X... that'd prevent you from building a squad with say 300points in a 100pt game. you also want to prevent Vader in Bacta Tank or Battle-Damaged DV being selectable, otherwise folks'd replace bacta tank vader with bacta tank vader...

Very similar design language to http://www.bloomilk.com/Custom/14886/darth-krayt--dark-lord-in-stasis

@CC, I like where you're going with that. @Kobay, Yeah, it's from Vader's castle in Rogue One.

@Saber1, It is very similar, though it wasn't intentional...

More of a "great minds think alike" scenario. Looking back at mine, I may have made it too tough to use Awaken.

Very cool and new but I would recommend toning down or limiting his ability somewhat. Hansickle version would actually work the best I think. It's cool to choose afterwards but everyone would just bring BHC Vader for epic beat downs. If you really don't want to make it like cost x 1/2 price then maybe increase his cost to 50

Awaken poses a problem in that it wildly swings the board in your favor because A) There are many Vaders and B) Many are very good. Whether your choice is unlimited or tied to a cost less than the cumulative cost of defeated allies, Awaken remains a trump card. Imagine a close game where a beefy Vader suddenly appears in the mix or a game that should be a loss suddenly flips to a win cuz the Dark Lord pulls himself together and grabs his glow stick.

What does one half consist of? if it is a 200 point match - 100 points is gone? I feel like you should go ahead and choose the Vader that can come out. I would choose Scourge of the Jedi if it was me. This way the Vader is still really good (especially in late game play against hopefully injured force users) but not so good that it leaves no chance for the other party involved.

instead of the criteria of "half" what about a time criteria? after 3 rounds or something like that? This is a really cool use of the bacta tank that is sitting at the bottom of all of our minis toolboxes. If you don't do a capped hansickle I'd bump the points to 35 and say you can only use a 71 point or less vader. Darth Vader, Dark Lord of the Sith is really tough to get at a 50% discount. Also maybe word something that 100 point palps can't reduce the cost even further. 100 point palps and a 26 point DV, DLotS would be very busted IMO.

Thanks for the feedback everyone! I think I'll try a modified hansickle idea. And I guess I could make it so his cost can't be reduced. Yes, in a 200 point game 100 points of your pieces would have to be destroyed before you get Vader. I also realise that getting a Vader at half cost would be a trump card, but that's why I gave him HP so your opponent has a chance to kill him before he gets out of the tank. I'd like to avoid being able to free Vader while you still have your whole squad, so I'm not sure about having it after a number of rounds.

@Saber1, You don't want your mind associated with mine... @everyone, Any ideas for the place holder name? And how does it look now?

"Counts as Vader" will prevent use of Vader's Apprentice.
CorellianComedian

For the record, I really like the fact that you can just kill Vader's tank before he comes out. I think that may be more of a balancing agent than we realize.

Might be tough with that CE. "Can't kill me til ya kill my guards at which time I can now pop out and kill ya!"

@corellianComedian, I see the piece being used with swap I would just place the thing way in the back with a door holder. At least that is how I would play it. I would play Reborn 83, Thrawn 32, Lobot, This piece (swapping Lothal) 23, Ozzel 11, Mas Amedda 8, 16 points filler. Kill off Reborn and let him kill some pieces as well with storm/devotion to get 100 points killed, bring in Lothal and swap in at end of round and surprise attack and than go to town.

Hmm... good point. Stupid swap :P

Changed to counts as. Bodyguard only works against attacks, not abilities. Of course getting close enough to use an ability might be challenging...

I like it much better now. And this would actually have the backs tank see some play

This is exactly what I was after when wanting to kick the CCC off again. Look how many different people from the community pitched in ideas. I love it. This many minds coming together to make cool, thought out and functional pieces is great. Keeps the game alive, at least it does for me.

But he also probably doesn't really need it since he's Cost X or half of whatever Vader

Okay, changed the name of the ability. I'm thinking that Rapport would come into play after you choose which Vader, so it would probably be good to have.
