Clone Wars Starter Set character but reduce points from 51 to 38 and add Force Levitate, Lightsaber Deflect, and Master of the Force 2.

Very nice. Lightsaber Deflect is basically a must-include for melee-focused lightsaber characters in my opinion, and with power-creep being as bad as it is, it might be necessary to include Force Renewal as well to give the character more than a handful of chances to use it.

WoTC should've given every force user force renewal and lightsaber deflect just as a rule of the game. Even before the virtual sets, most melees were at a massive disadvantage to ranged characters.

They actually weren't. Yes, melee is a detriment when you could just shoot, but between Rebel Storm and Universe just having a fat stat block was usually enough for a piece to bully out a win. Once you get to TFU with its huge force abilities and especially Legacy of the Force with GMA, stats became less important than having ways to just negate damage. This only got worse with the CW - MOTF era with proliferation of the styles. which were just force powers but free.

Looking back there were three big balancing things they could have done. 1.) Add the ability for any lightsaber wielder to use block/deflect even if it isn't listed on the card. 2.) Introduce set rotation, especially for competitive play. A great example of this is how certain users here play by breaking the game into eras, something like, RS - BH, AE-KOTOR, CW - MOTF. 3.) Erratas to change point costs or add specific abilities to certain characters. EG, Add Djem So Style to all Darth Vaders.

I agree with that, all three of those changes would've been great, but I still feel melee characters were underpowered. To make a melee piece playable they had to have certain special abilities/force powers or stacked stats to stand a chance to some of the most powerful shooters. There were many possible ways to even out ranged and melee figures, but that never happened and thus a lot of decent melee pieces just get obliterated by shooters.

Well, if nothing else, we've got IYH here to keep updating the pieces of old to make them good / viable once more. I can settle for that.
