Well, reasonably close and reasonably priced are direct opposites when you're talking about a downtown area of a city. :P

Your best bet is just surf the internet options and see what you can find. The hotels right across teh street from the convention center are typically in the $150-$200 range per night, but you can get as low as $70-$100 per night if you're willing to go 5-8 miles out. Luckily, the convention center is real easy to get to from the interstates, so going a few miles out isn't too bad at all.

Plus, even if you stay in the hotels across the street, you usually have to pay for parking for those 3-4 days anyways. So, for the extra money you're really just getting the convenience of the close hotel room.

You're going to want to book your room as soon as possible. Last year, on top of GenCon stuff, there were things going on at the new Colt's stadium next door. So definitely don't wait till the last minute.

If you don't mind staying 10 miles or so away from the convention center and driving in each day, considering searching for hotels in the following cities (direction from in parentheses):

Greenwood (S)
Avon (W)
Carmel (N)
Fishers (NE)

These cities are just outside the county line from Indianapolis and you should be able to get decent rates.
