Gerry, what can I say man. It was of course a pleasure as always and your x-wing set up is an absolute work of art. That was so awesome to get a chance to play on that board.

Indeed! Gerry, that board was awesome! The lighting on it was really cool and the space backdrop was really nicely painted. Class act all the way.

I agree, it was great to meet the faces behind the (user) names. Shawn and Tim, great to meet you both - so glad you both could make it!

Gerry, nice to see you since Battle of Hoth.

Joe & Dennis, always a pleasure.

Jak, thanks for hosting and organizing the tournament. Had lots of fun!

I would have liked to have played any of the other four guys (Shawn, Gerry, Jak and Joe). It's ironic to be paired against the one person I play against on Vassal -- let alone twice in the same day. I appreciate playing against Dennis, but I was looking to get schooled by someone else for a change. ;)

Tim, I learned a lot from your matches. You got me to see past the 'walls'. hehe thx

My Vong squad ::
--Bay Bombers - That's How We Roll--
34 Nom Anor
30 Supreme Overlord Quorreal
27 Nen Yim
20 Yuuzhan Vong Hunter on Quednak
19 Yomin Carr
15 Yammosk War Coordinator
28 Yuuzhan Vong Hunter x2
11 Advance Agent, Officer
16 Yuuzhan Vong Worker x4

Preferred Reinforcements:
(S. O. Quorreal) 12 Yuuzhan Vong Worker x4
(S. O. Quorreal) 8 Zonoma Sekot Scout x2

(200pts. 19 activations)

That's the trouble with doing an all Vong squad -- no override and low door control. The other trouble was playing the same opponent 2 times -- he tends to learn NOT to allow my gallop attack for a max of 100pt of damage per target. I think it has potential once override becomes available to the Vongs. I really liked 'Aggressive Negotiations' paired with a super-stealthed Worker as it seemed to annoy the heck out of my opponents, plus make those pieces worth zero amount of victory points (and gave me an extra 6 points worth of 'Loyal Followers').

Tim got me with my own overzealousness to cover every possible exit out of the Carbon Freeze Chamber, only to force phase through the wall, strafe and pop 'em all. That and he didn't give my YWC any CE to steal. :(

Dennis got me the second time with 'death-shots' and bodyguard. 3 Mando Scouts are rough.

Ok, so here's what I ran on Saturday:

--Akron-Con Kelborn's Scouting Party--
54 Jaster Mereel
28 Kelborn
23 Mandalorian Captain
57 Mandalorian Scout x3
11 Death Watch Saboteur
8 R7 Astromech Droid
7 Mandalorian Crusader
9 Mouse Droid x3
3 Ugnaught Demolitionist

Preferred Reinforcements:
(Jaster Mereel) 16 Mandalorian Gunsmith
(Jaster Mereel) 12 Mandalorian Counter-Intelligence Officer

(200pts. 15 activations)

My first match was against Jak (same as last years regional) on my map choice Night Club (a very shooter friendly map). Jak was running a Bastilla squad with some handmaidens so I brought in another Scout and Mando Scientist to continue to give my shooters twin when ABM was on. The key to this for me was that I was on the map I wanted and the side I wanted. I was able to open fire in the first round with all 5 of my double-twin-greater mobile guys and they can do a lot of damage quick. The handmaidens evaded when they could, but not enough, and I was able to quickly reduce Jak's activation count, which played into one of the reliable ABM counter strategies - out activation. With so many cloaked guys, Jak had very few targets and I was able to get my saboteur hidden in gambit in the first round. Jak killed whatever he saw with those handmaidens but my cloaked guys really saved the day for me. Fortunate for me, Jak didn't beat me like last year.

My next match was against Kreg (Editor) and that Vong squad of his. I brought in a CIO to counter his activation control and a Mando Protector to help guard against his galloping attack. We played on his map, Cloud City, and I put him on the landing platform. The only thing I did correctly in this match was I was able to get a guy in gambit in the first round. I got my butt handed to me by those stupid plasma eels and the bunch of Mando's I was running together as a group for Resol'nare really cost me. With few targets to go after, Kreg moved anyone I had a shot on, there wasn't much to do but try to maneuver which didn't work at all this game. Outplayed by Kreg, I don't think I ever had a chance with this game.

Next up was Joe and his Specforce Rebels. Once again, the big bonus was winning map choice. Joe picked the side I prefer so I was on the landing platform side. I brought in a CIO again to counter Dodonna and a Gunsmith to help with cunning and door control. Joe brought in Zombie Leia which proved a wise choice. Very early in the match I used Kelborn a little recklessly and it nearly cost me the game. Reduced to 10 hit points, he was able to do his best Monty Python imitation and 'run away' using Resol'nare. I managed to kill a few of Joe's guys but he managed to bring a few of them back with the Leia save roll. When I say a few, I really mean 4 times. It was brutal. He narrowly missed saving 2 other times. He even gave out a victory cheer with the first save, it was quite humerous for all. In the end, my cloaked shooters enabled me to win the game on points.

At 2 - 1 with 5 points, I faced Kreg once more in the first round of the finals. He won map choice and I set up on the same side as before. Fortunate for me I have learned that doing something the same way and expecting different results is insane, so I varied my strategy this game. Instead of heading down the main hall, I headed into the carbon freezing chamber. I was able to kill his shaper very early in the game and it set the stage for this game to go down differently. In the end I managed a 2 point win.

Last came Tim in the finals. Ummmm, yea. I brougt in a Gunsmith and 2 crusaders to try to counter his republic STAP infection. We played on Cloud City once more and I set up on the same side I did all day. I shot when I could, tried to splash his mice while grouped when I could, but in the end I was facing a much better player. On his first run Tim killed a crusader who managed to put 20 damage into Annie with his death shot. Tim never gave my other crusaders the chance the rest of the game. He avoided the death shots the rest of the game. Seeing the inevitable my only hope near the end was to try to base his jedi and do some damage. I hit Annie pretty hard with Kelborn but Feris bodyguarded 90 points of it and with that I was truely done. The better player won. Well played Tim.

I had a lot of fun. I only wish I had the chance to play Gerry and Shawn. I learned a lot in my games, and hopefully I will put that knowledge to good use in future games.

Here is the squad I ran on Saturday:

--My Kind of Scum--
60 Jabba the Hutt, Galactic Crime Boss
43 Cad Bane, Bounty Hunter
33 Aurra Sing, Assassin
30 BX Commando Droid Spotter x2
14 BX Commando Droid Sniper
12 Gha Nachkt
8 Mouse Droid x4

Preferred Reinforcements:
(Jabba, GCB) 17 Greedo, Bounty Hunter
(Jabba, GCB) 7 R7 Astromech Droid
(Jabba, GCB) 6 Mouse Droid x3

(200pts. 16 activations)

I used the same reinforcements for all three of my matches (mostly because my head was too foggy following Fridays festivities to change them up). A better option part of the time would have been to bring an MTB, R7, Uggie and 6 mice.

First round I got to face off against Tim and his Stap-Infection squad. We played on his map (Cloud City) so I choose to set up on the left. Even if I wasn't dealing with a hangover I'm guessing Tim would have still prevailed but it would have been interesting. Jabba's CE can be really strong for Bounty Hunters but not when facing a bunch of uniques who go cloaked in the first round. Tim set up in the rooms above the landing platform and moved along the top of the map, towing Ani-Stap into the single row corridor in round 2. I had opened things up through the main hallway as well as through the other set of doors leading into the gambit room but still couldn't get to Ani and was worried about him phasing through walls and back. I made an overly aggressive move to run Aurra 14 squares (with a force point) and layed into the Dark Woman (plus getting a combined fire from a Spotter) which would have been enough to kill her had I not rolled like a 4 or 5 on one of my attacks. Aurra bought it hard after that. I did get a really nice long LOS on Jorus with Greedo at one point but I just wasn't able to get enough damage on anyone and kamikaazied Cad late in the game to make a last ditch effort to do something. It wasn't horribly lopsided points wise before then but I just couldn't figure out a good way to get at him.

2nd round I faced Jak with Bastila, Atris, 4 Echani's and door control/fodder. We played on Peaceful City and Jak made a positioning error near the end of round one not realizing that both Cad and Aurra could get a LOS on one of his Echani's and she couldn't evade enough of the shots I put into her. My Spotters and Sniper continued to move up the map w/ their intuition which made a really big impact on my ability to keep his Echani's pinned down. Jak's second Echani met her demise in round 2 when he forgot about the BX Spotters Energy Shield and she ended up shooting herself to death. By this point Bastila had gotten ABM running stopping Aurra from moving around too much but Cad was still free to Furious Assault. I basically didn't give Jak any opportunities to shoot at anything other than mice or Greedo (a reinforcement) but they were adjacent to a BX Spotter anyway keeping Cad and Aurra safe. As I continued knocking off his Echani's he decided to move Atris and Bastila up to help which turned ABM off. I then moved 12 w/ Greedo getting Charging Fire and Snared Bastila (getting 30 on her w/ Cunning). Jak had to run Atris out to try and get rid of my droids and I surprised him by spending a Force w/ Aurra, running 14 to base Atris. I had 1 Spotter left who combined fire on 1 shot meaning I was going to put 110 damage on Atris and kill her except I rolled 2 consecutive 1's! Cursing I killed her off the next round but then time was called with an 80 health Bastila still on the board along with I think 2 R7's (and maybe an Uggie or something).

3rd round I got to take a crack at Gerry and his Jaina Mando squad. We played on Peaceful City again. With Resol'nare Gerry made it into Gambit in round 1. I intended to flank 1 of the side doors with a Spotter and Sniper with their Intuition in Round 2 but he won init and used Resol'nare 1st allowing Jaina to base them before they could intuition. I decided to give up the AOO's since it wouldn't kill them and move them into position to try and get some use out of them. I split them, positioning the Spotter to be ready for a CF into the gambit room and the Sniper a few squares away. Gerry then saw an opportunity to run in and take out Aurra but caught himself just before he moved nearly forgetting he wouldn't get the twin on her, only the triple. With that he moved and took out the spotter before running Jaina back out of sight. He then moved Kelbor up to get the Sniper in the open and finished him off. He was also trying to goad me into going after Kelborn but I was hoping for an opportunity to kill Jaina but w/o a Spotter lined up Aurra wasn't going to be able to drop her alone. But then a funny thing happened, I managed to get a long LOS on Jaina with Cad and rolled a crit........but she deflected it. Then I proceeded to roll another crit with the twin and she had to take the 40. At that point I charged Aurra in for the kill on Jaina since she can do 90 on her own. Unfortunately I lost init and Aurra got finished off. Greedo teamed up with a Spotter the next round to smoke 1 of Gerry's Scouts but I was just a little too far behind in points (12 to be exact) when we finished our last round after time had been called and gambit added up.

In the end I lost a really close one to Gerry, got a win against Jak where he had a really bad matchup against me, and couldn't figure out how to beat Tim until the next day when we rehashed it on the long trip home. Even then Tim still would have been able to switch gears and simply change his strategy accordingly. I really wish I would have gotten to play against Joe, Kreg and Dennis but thats just how it is sometimes.

As for the squad I ran, it probably just ranks more in the fun category as there are better options for Cad BH squads but it's still got some punch and has plenty of good matchups. I kept Jabba in the back all day and nobody really got close. I thought long and hard about putting him in gambit to start but never did it. Against Gerry it could have been really interesting as he wouldn't have been able to bunker down in gambit the same way.

Again, I had a great time and looking forward to the next time I get to see all of these guys!

My squad:

--20/Halfhour--
23 Crix Madine, SpecForce Commander
40 SpecForce Marine x2
19 Princess Leia, Rebel Commando
45 SpecForce Infiltrator x3
30 SpecForce Technician x2
15 SpecForce Urban Combat Specialist
9 General Dodonna
9 R2-D2 with Extended Sensor
9 Ugnaught Demolitionist x3

(199pts. 15 activations)

Went against Gerry's Mandos first. Stealthed/Cloaked vs Cloaked UGH! R1 Positioning. R2 Gerry wins init Resol'nare's Jaina up, then master speeds out, kills an Infiltrator GMAs back. (my jaw drops) Response: Infiltrator moves up 18,19 puts 40 damage on Jaina, Marine runs 12 spaces 18,19 puts 60 on Jaina, with a failed deflect. (Gerry's jaw drops).
With a 10 pt Jaina left he played more conservitively, but Mando Jaina is wicked fast. Victory Gerry.

Vs Dennis, another blasted Mando squad. Dennis wins init, Resol'nare's up moves, Kelborn out, kills a Marine. Man I'm sick of this Resol'nare Cha-Cha. Second Marine puts his faith in Leia HC runs 12, puts 60 damage on Kelborn. Marine is brutally attacked and killed, but Leia brings him back.(That was my uncontrolled burst of glee.) Can only claim an anoyance victory here, four zombies (and two 15's rolled) made Dennis shake his head several times.
