We’re only adding 15 minutes while nearly doubling the point total?

only 2-3 activations are added, so i didn't think that warranted that much more time. last year we did 90 minutes per game with epics being added and that was fine.

With Epics it often comes down to a massive init with Epic vs Epic and one destroys the other, propelling the game along faster. I think with this format it’s going to be very different. If you built your squad a very certain way (mostly melee brutes) it gives you a completely unfair advantage.

The whole point of a time limit and attaching higher tournament points to completed games (over non-completed games) is to encourage engagement. You're correct that melee squads, by their very nature, tend towards engagement, and so that in that aspect they do have an advantage...but we all know the (many) inherent advantages that shooters have over melee pieces, so I think it is still an advantage for shooters, in the end. If anything, the shorter time limit simply forces shooter squads to play faster.

If only it were that simplistic. As someone who has vast experience playing shooter squads, it’s usually the opponent who plays slower. They often don’t realize they are, but it’s usually the case. They count out spaces again and again, trying to see where they can not be shot, and not being as familiar with the sight lines, it takes much longer. It’s the opponent that eats up more time. Then I’m faced with the choice of being the jerk, or letting it go. More often than not in the last several years, I let it go. Most of the people in this community I consider friends, and I just don’t want to sit there and say “you’re not playing fast enough. You need to play faster” continuously. And then what? Without it being a live tournament, what do we do? There’s no judge to call. Not worth the trouble, not worth the drama. But it is a distinct disadvantage. I accept that this is how this tournament is being run, and I will abide by the rules. But I must also express that it clearly advantages certain squad types over others. I hope future tournaments at this point level will have longer time limits. I’m not expecting 2.5 hours. 2 hours is fine. Even 1hr 45min would be much better. Otherwise it just narrows the meta to very particular types of squads, and narrow metas are frequently cited as making it overall less fun for everyone.

This debate could go on forever (and has, to various degrees at different points).

Perhaps the reason that the melee player needs to do all that counting is because the shooter player is either kiting or keeping all of their pieces well out of reach...and then when the melee player does close the distance, the shooter just moves away and the cycle continues (or else simply obliterates the piece that was foolish enough to advance without protection). So in the end it results in a game of cat and mouse, which is tedious at best, and which is almost guaranteed not to result in a 3pt win unless one player makes a massive blunder. So while you might want to say, "you need to play faster," I might respond with "you need to engage rather than retreat." It goes both ways. While melee can't expect shooters to charge headlong into the pointy end of a lightsaber, shooters can't expect melee to stand out in the open waiting to become a pin-cushion.

gandalf defeats N3rdSl4y3r 380-166 (3-0)

I won map so we played on Crime Lord's Palace with N3rdSl4y3r taking the left. Callista haunted Luke, Con Artists stole Satchel Charge.

Round 1, we both advanced, with Battle Ready and Vector Prime getting my whole squad to the central room by the end of the round. N3rdSl4y3r got gambit with Vader.

Round 2, N3rdSl4y3r didn't roll a 1. Wrenga Jixton took a shot at Kyp's Supervisor. Ben pulled Vader into the middle of my squad and whacked him for 30, and got hit back with Djem So. Luke used Throw 2 to get around Djem So and knocked Vader down to 20 HP. Sidious zapped Ben, and Vader killed him and put 40 damage on Luke. Jacen missed Vader twice, then Shevu finished him off and hit Sidious for 20. N3rdSl4y3r's shooters took some shots; Weir hit Jacen, some troopers killed Luke's Supervisor. Near the end of the round, Ganner levitated Kyp next to Sidious, and he hit 2/4 attacks with Brutal Strike to leave Sidious at 70 HP. Marn hit Kyp for 20. Callista moved close to Kyp in case he needed to be revived, but Teek was having none of that and got adjacent to Kyp.

Round 3, N3rdSl4y3r didn't roll a 1. Sidious evaporated Kyp. Luke ran up next to Sidious and dropped him to 10 HP with a Throw 2, then Shevu finished him off. Weir killed Shevu. Ganner pushed Teek into oblivion. Eryl rolled a crit on Jixton. N3rdSl4y3r's troopers shot at Eryl for a while until they killed her.

Round 4, I won init and made N3rdSl4y3r go first. After some potshots, Ganner levitated Luke over some heads to go after the source of all combined fire problems, Tarkin. The Death Trooper bodyguarded some of it and ended up dying. The troopers and other shooters continued pouring some shots into Luke. Jacen killed Ysanne Isard.

Round 4, N3rdSl4y3r won init. Tarkin hit Luke, then Luke killed him. Weir managed to defeat Luke, only for him to instantly return via Callista. Jacen and Ganner cleaned up the rest.

Yeah, it all went south right away in Round 1, when he towed Bacara in for a deep strike on my ugnaught, followed by Scorch the next round.

UrbanShmi over urbanjedi, 327-200 (2-1) on Desert Palace.

I won map, and J set up on the left, with Droopy in the center room but not adjacent to the door. J used Battle Ready to move most of his guys up before the start of the first round. The first round was mostly positioning, with R2 towing up Foul and locking the center door, then Mace swapping in and being lifted by Foul into gambit.

The second round went very quickly, as J either soothed, Sith Sorceried, or Lightninged (with Sid) most of my important pieces. Additionally, for the first half of the game, most of my CEs were shut off by a very well-placed ReyLo. However, YodaMoto was finally able to kill them with lightsaber throws.

After ReyLo died, the Sith Sorceries got even worse for me. Revan was pretty nasty in this match, with everyone pretty much clustered around him I managed to run Mace down and critted on Vader, ultimately killing him. Eventually, the survivors of the sorcery onslaught also managed to take out Revan, although it was difficult without Yoda, who was constantly activated and pretty much didn't do anything or even move after ReyLo's death.

Then it was just the Emperor against the world, and with the Parry and the positioning, I couldn't quite take him out before the end of time.

This was a really good game with a lot of changes, and I'm glad my squad FINALLY lived up to its potential.

Spryguy1981 (3) defeats DarkDracul (0) 440-79 on Desert Palace.
Reinforcements were Wicket, a Mouse, and an Uggie.

R1 we moved a lot of pieces and I was able to get Jaq setup to cannon and he killed a Cobalt.

R2 I win init and cannon Jaq again for a 2nd Cobalt. We move a bunch more pieces around and he runs Jacen in to set up a good Predictive Reflexes on Jaq. I used Satele to push Jacen and then smacked him with my TJG for dead. Wicket kept him in Traps.

R3 was the bloodshed. Reylo came in and hit all 3 attacks on Jaq but he made his Avoid Defeat saves. T3 targeted him and Wicket trapped him. TJG used LSF and put damage on him to drop him down to 50HP. Jaq finished him off. Luke smacked Satele but she made a parry to stay alive and she killed Paige. Thon twinned Luke and hit a cannon to finally get him down to 60HP.

R4 I win init and Thon twins Luke who uses his last FP to Defense. Thon drops him to 20. Then I sac the XT who triggers the Senator who cannons Thon to kill Luke.

R5 I chase the rest of the squad down and kill them.

There were some insane rolls on both sides and I went Mace Windu crit crazy without having Mace. Bryan made some good parries for a good chunk of the match too. Always a fun game with Bryan.
