Welcome to the Tournament of Champions!

In light of the cancellation of FrostyCon (and I still hope it can be rescheduled), I want to see some kind of discussion about the competitive meta. So welcome to the Tournament of Champions!

This will be a simple playoff bracket of 16 squads, randomly seeded. And *YOU* can help determine the winner!

There will be one squad from each of the 10 factions (counting Fringe as a faction), where each faction's representative has been chosen based on the faction's best tournament results. There are a few factions where the "best result" is debatable, but I've favored GenCon results and more recent results. The other 6 entries are wildcards, and are going to subfactions and to squads that feature V-Set 15 pieces that look like they might be competitive: Hutt Cartel, either First Order or Rogue One (requiring 75% from the subfaction), Resistance, new Sith (Vader or Vitiate), new OR (probably Vodo or Wookiee Commander), and new Separatist (GG, Scorpenek, Dooku, Kul Teska, and/or Nico Okarr).

So after scouring the tournament results here are the 10 entrants for each faction (subjectively chosen):

OR: urbanjedi's "Triple Hex Return of Xander Blizz" - 2017 FrostyCon winner
http://www.bloomilk.com/Squad/174472/triple-hex-return-of-xander-blizz--frosty-2017-regional-winner-

Sith: FlyingArrow's "Dance of Death: UberTank" - 2015 GenCon 2nd place
http://www.bloomilk.com/Squad/143449/dance-of-death--ubertank--2nd-place-gencon-2015-

Separatist: gandalfthegreatestwizard's "Just paid for itself" - 2017 LowerHuttaCon 2nd place
http://www.bloomilk.com/Squad/179299/just-paid-for-itself

Republic: urbanjedi's Skybuck variant - 2016 GenCon 2nd place
http://www.bloomilk.com/Squad/186036/skybuck-variant--2016-gencon-2nd-place-by-urbanjedi-

Rebel: thereisnotry's "Prison Break" - 2016 GenCon winner
http://www.bloomilk.com/Squad/170151/prison-break---winner-of-gencon-2016-championship

Imperial: atmsalad's "Roger Stone" - 2017 GenCon winner
http://www.bloomilk.com/Squad/178577/-roger-stone-of-swm-v2--2017-gencon-champion

New Republic: fingersandteeth's "ehh..." - 2017 GenCon 2nd place
http://www.bloomilk.com/Squad/186034/ehh-----gencon-2017-2nd-place-squad-by-fingersandteeth-

Fringe: Darth_Jim's "jim's jam session 2.0": 2017 Michigan Regional winner (piloted by urbanjedi)
http://www.bloomilk.com/Squad/175091/jims-jam-session-2-0

Mandalorian: Darth_Moore's "Three Kings" - 2017 GenCon 4th place
http://www.bloomilk.com/Squad/172394/three-kings--4th-at-gencon-2017-

Yuuzhan Vong: spryguy1981's "Blast Bugs 2017" was the 2017 Spring Vassal Regional Winner, but it received a pretty significant nerf, so I'm going with spry's updated version that uses Warriors in place of the scouts: "2018 Blast Bugs". Here's the 2017 version and then the updated version. Since the new version hasn't been entered competitively, its seed will be adjusted accordingly:

http://www.bloomilk.com/Squad/186133/2018-blast-bugs

As far as the six wildcards. They are being chosen through squadbuliding tournaments to identify the best squads for each of these six categories (winners will be added as they are decided):

* Resistance: gandalfthegreatestwizard's "General Nien Wexley with Poecaster"
http://www.bloomilk.com/Squad/186016/general-nien-wexley-with-poecaster

* First Order or Rogue One (75% in-subfaction): CorranHornsux123's "Rouge 1 Standing By"
http://www.bloomilk.com/Squad/186031/rouge-1-standing-by

* Hutt Cartel (75% pure required): TheHutts' "Hutt Cartel Kajidii on Hoversled"
http://www.bloomilk.com/Squad/170829/hutt-cartel-kajidii-on-hoversled

* V-Set 15 Sith: Caedus's "Naarkonesque"

* V-Set 15 Old Republic: FlyingArrow's "Triple Ven"

* V-Set 15 Separatist: gandalfthegreatestwizard's "So Uncivilized."

RULES

There will be one active match at a time. (One at a time because I don't want to flood the forum with 16 threads, and trying to discuss multiple games at the same time in the same thread would be too confusing.) While the match is active, everyone is welcome to present their arguments for which side they think would win. Everyone is also welcome to vote for who they think would win, whether they present arguments or not. Everyone is also welcome to play games between the two squads to determine who would win. Scoring will be determined as follows:

* If the two players whose names are attached to the squads agree to actually play each other (or designate someone to play in their place) - the winner advances. Period. It's worth 1000 points per game.
* Otherwise, everyone gets a vote and each vote is worth 1 point.
* Also, if you run a solo game between the two squads, please report it. The winning squad gets 5 points. You can run multiple solo games, and each time the winner will get 5 points for each win. Theoretical minis are great, but actual minis are better.
* If two players play against each other with the two squads, please report it. The winning squad gets 10 points. You can play multiple times for 10 points each.

Maps and Reinforcements: If the squad's representative has announced a map preference and/or Reinforcements choice, use those choices. Beyond that, use your best judgement.

Deadlines
* A 24-hour deadline for each game will be announced.
* Votes must be submitted before the deadline.
* Because games sometimes take some time to arrange, they may be played after the deadline. However, they must be announced (with a concrete date/time) before the deadline, and the planned game must be played within 48 hours of the deadline.
* When the deadline is up, results will be posted. If there are no unplayed games remaining, results are final. If there are unplayed games, results will be tentative and the results of the remaining games will be added to the totals once those results are known.

Tiebreakers
If the deadline arrives and there is a tie, here are the tiebreaker rules:
1. If one squad's representative voted but the other did not, the squad of the representative who voted wins.
2. If one squad's representative played a game with the squad but other did not, but the squad of the representative who played a game wins.
3. Higher seed wins.

Seeding:
Tournament seeding is according to the following rules, but the rules themselves are somewhat arbitrary:
* Highest seeds go to squads with GenCon results. GenCon winners first, ordered by recency. Then 2nd place, ordered by recency, etc.
* Other tournament winners get the next highest seeds ordered by recency.
* Finally, squads that did well in a tournament but did not win, ordered by recency. (Note that Naarkonesque is in this category based on ScrambleCon results.)
* After that, squads that have not been entered in a competitive tournament, randomly seeded. (Blast Bugs 2018 is in this category since it's a major shake-up after the Scout errata.)

And after running the random numbers, here's the seeding:
1. Roger Stone
2. Prison Break
3. ehh... (Corellian Solo Charge)
4. Skybuck
5. Dance of Death (Caedus/Barriss)
6. Three Kings
7. Jim's Jam Session
8. Triple Hex
9. Naarkonesque
10. Just Paid for Itself (BX Commandos)
11. Triple Ven
12. Hutt Cartel Kajidii
13. Seps Vset 15
14. Rouge One
15. Blast Bugs
16. Gen Nien Wexley with Poecaster

I just ran the random numbers for the seeding (only the last few slots were randomized seeding... the rest were based on competitive results). A link to the bracket will be posted after the last two squadbuilding tournaments are complete. But from the seeding we can see the first match. Let's go ahead and get it started.

GAME #1: "Roger Stone of SWM V2" versus "General Nien Wexley with Poecaster"

Please vote for which squad you think would win (1 point per vote), assuming equally skilled players.
Try to persuade others to agree with you.
If you play a game with these squads against yourself (solo playtest), it's worth 5 points to the winning squad.
Two-player games count even more (10 points to the winning squad).
The squad with the most points wins.

If atmsalad and gandalfthegreatestwizard themselves play the game, the result of that skirmish will be final, regardless of other voting or other results.

Likely Imperials, although the map would be important. With 4 differently names types of attackers, Poe loses a lot of his scissors-effectiveness. Resistance just doesn't have a good answer to the Diplomats or being outactivated. There's enough potential counters (Poe and Chewie barrages, Nien mines) that with a mistake or two Resistance could catch the Imperials with their pants down and turn the tides very quickly, but the troopers should win if they play safely.

Don't forget that blastedable repulsor sled in the imperial squad as well. I've seen it wreck havock on opposing squads more than once and if it can get to Leia could take a lot of the stamps out of the resistance squad. I've gotta go with the Imps here, activation advantage is huge in this game.

I don't think the sled is going to get to Leia. Nien would be in the path, and Mines would likely kill the sled, so Imp player wouldn't risk it, at least not on round 1. And if he did reach Leia, she'd have Han/Chewie as bodyguards. Then again, taking Chewie out is probably more important than taking out Leia anyway. So I don't think the sled is a major concern here - it'll do some damage but not kill Han, Chewie or Leia (maybe take out Poe with a couple cannon shots?) and then die quickly.

Still, Resistance has no real way to deal with the Diplomats and once one of them gets adjacent to Chewie, the Barrages go away and half the Resistance's firepower goes away. That would be the ballgame right there. Absent more persuasive arguments to the contrary, I also vote for Roger Stone.

EDIT: I'd guess 70-30 for the Imps.

Oh this is great! I love theoretical minis!!

For this match-up I would swap out an IMP Officer for the Scout Trooper Officer giving the EST's super stealth and increasing the usefulness of the diplomats. BB8 would be my first priority, then Nien Nunb depending on positioning of course. Your first goal is almost always to trade the sled for important tech. This game that tech would be BB8 in order to protect the EST's. Charging is a big advantage here as it allows the imps to charge into lines of site to finish of characters when chewie cant see them.

For the resistance squad to have a chance they would need to play super aggressive. It is a case where they need to use BB to slingshot someone towards the Imp players commanders to have a genuine go of it. If you can't do that though I am not sure how it could be pulled off. The Resistence is out activated by 10, which means the majority of the imp players attackers are still able to go after the Resistence is all activated out.

I would put the odds at probably 85% to 15% in favor of the Imperials, but I am sort of biased, haha

I concur that Roger Stone is likely to win. I'm happy to delegate for an official match if anyone wants to play, though, because I think the Resistance has a better chance in a skirmish than in a vote.

Yeah, by 'delegate' I meant give to someone else. If I played it would be certain defeat for me. LOL

I thought you were handing it off because you didn't do Vassal. If you can, I think you should go for it! If not, Bryan is a good candidate. He has a good amount of Resistance experience to draw on.

Well, I have Vassal but have never played a game on it, so I don't think that I'd do very well. But regardless, I am presently not able to play games on Vassal, for reasons of my own.
